Barnabas of Rockford
The Barnabas Guild is a special ministry to serve those who are in nursing homes or homebound. It is especially designed to train folks to minister to patients at P. A. Peterson Center for Health, Rockford, IL. Following a training program offered through the chaplaincy department at P. A. Peterson, trainees are assigned to a "special person" at the home. Monthly visits then follow. There is a continuation of training to encourage visitors in this ministry. Caring can be tough. That’s why Barnabas caregiving is designed to approach people in special situations with skills – to become a skilled caregiver. One skill is how to know what another is going through in any stage of life. Another skill is how to have the best conversation in any situation. The third skill is how to recognize and help grieving. After nine hours of training participants are eligible to become commissioned ministers of P.A. Peterson Center for Health, or bring this free caregiving program to their congregation. Barnabas caregivers believe passionately that Paul Tillich is right: The first duty of love is to listen. We listen with love – and so care. For more information contact Dr Chuck Olson at P.A. Peterson Center for Health, 815-399-8832 x 4142.

Sunday Afternoon’s Relational Intelligence: Changing Minds was fascinating. Ten people came to my home and enjoyed hot beverages and appetizers – and reflected on Howard Gardner’s seven strategies – levers – for changing our and others’ minds.

What’s next for this new field we’re inventing? It’s last Sunday of the quarter meetings on future topics. Options? I’m looking forward to your voice – and your vote.(The class voted for all of these.)
