He became ill (possibly from Tuberculosis) and moved to Giddings, TX where he bought a farm. Some of his illness is attributed to an accident incurred while he worked as a carpenter in the building of a Lutheran Church in William Penn, TX. The scaffolding on which he was working broke and he never really fully regained from the injury he received in the fall.
