Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized on a Sunday In Feburary, 1883. Two weeks before a group of German Lutheran immigrants at the suggestion of William Reholdt, one of their number, had applied to Wartburg Seminary at Mendota, Illinois for assistance in organizing a congregation here in Clinton Iowa. Professor John Fritschel, then a student of theology at the seminary, came to conduct the first service. Thirty-two families joined in founding Zion Church with an additional eighteen families added within the next six weeks. In June, 1883, Rev. Paul H. Valentiner was called to be Zion's first resident pastor. Today Zion continues to be a vital and vibrant community of faith. | |
