To see the KVUE 10 o'clock News video televised on Good Friday, April 22, 2011, click on the link below. The interview is with Eli Apolzon and two uninsured families whose homes were destroyed in the wildfire. They are two of the families we are raising funds for. They ask for your HELP.
As I mentioned in my letter dated April 19, 2011, to our Mayor, Lee Leffingwell, and our City Manager, Marc Ott, "Our goal will be to put everyone back to the financial situation they were in before the fire as opposed to giving everyone an equal amount of money."

Oak Hill Wildfire Fundraiser: How you can help |
|
If you live around Austin, you know about the destructive wildfire in the Oak Hill area on Sunday, April 17, 2011, which spread to over 100 acres, destroying at least EIGHT homes, badly DAMAGING another ten or more, and displacing several hundred area residents while our brave firefighters and Texas Forest Service planes fought and extinguished the horrific blaze.
And now, it is our turn. We, the gracious and sometimes "Weird" people of Austin, will jump in and do our part. Our non profit is focusing on raising funds for the rebuilding of two homes. The addresses are 7209 and 7317 Scenic Brook Drive. We are one of several groups raising funds to rebuild these two homes. Most of the labor for the tear down and cleanup has been provided by many volunteer workers. Dumpsters for the burned materials have also been donated by companies in that business. Reconstruction of the corner home at 7317 Scenic Brook began in August 2011 and all of those skills have also been generously provided by volunteer craftsmen in the various trades. Your donations will primarily be used to purchase the building materials and are very much appreciated. |
 Totally destroyed | |
|
Here's the PLAN: |
Our goal is to assist in raising funds to rebuild the homes of two Oak Hill residents. The wildfire consumed each of their homesteads on Sunday, April 17, 2011. We need the help of ALL Austin area residents to raise these funds. Yes, that means You. Just a small donation of ten dollars from 10,000 Austinites will add up to $100,000. And I know there's at least that many of us in Austin who can give five or ten dollars because I see most of you every day on MoPac slowly crossing over Lady Bird Lake at five in the afternoon still with enough energy to listen to Jeff Ward. Which reminds me, call in and ask Jeff to help us get the word out. He's connected. He's like "The Man!!" And it is "Our Little Show."
If you're in . . . scroll back up this page a few paragraphs and read how you can give a few dollars at any Wells Fargo Bank in the entire State of Texas. Thank you, Eli . . . |

A September 2011 update:
As I sit here updating this website to tell of the progress in Oak Hill, the smell of smoke fills the air all around Austin as seemingly endless wildfires rage out of control in Bastrop, Smithville, Steiner Ranch, Spicewood, Leander and other areas nearby. Well over a thousand homes have been destroyed and lives are being lost. Help us with your donations quickly because very shortly we will need to focus on an even greater amount of rebuilding funds needed.
I ask for your prayers and gifts for well over a thousand victims.
Eli . . . .....

Our Mission Statement
|
|
To build and sell affordable homes below cost to qualified families and disaster victim families. To provide loans for these families at a below market interest rate, with special emphasis on families having children with Autism, Down Syndrome, and other special needs. To assist qualified families with medical, therapy, and recreational expenses for their Special Needs children. And to assist our community (Austin and the surrounding area) in fundraising projects which help families meet their affordable living expenses.
We also place special emphasis and high priority on assisting military families of fallen soldiers serving our country. Homes built for these families can be given to them debt free when we are able to raise the funds to fully pay for a home. ::: END :::

How Will the Funds be Used? |
|
January 10, 2011: I am pleased to let the whole world know I have just received a phone call from one of Vernon's grandchildren who just recently learned about the scholarship funds we originated for his heirs who chose to accept it. The grandchild who called is making plans for their first year in college and shared with me how this fund is making their dream become a reality. Please send a donation as soon as possible, no matter how small, so we can get the funds to his grandchild as soon as possible so they can pay their tuition. Yes, we check everything out and make sure the funds are properly used. And then send an email for me to one hundred of your best friends and ask them also for a five or ten dollar donation to the Vernon Hunter Scholarship Fund.
Thank you for spreading the word. Eli Apolzon
The Trust will fund up to twenty educational scholarships each in the amount of $500 for the benefit of students attending Cedar Park and Austin area high schools, and up to twenty educational scholarships each in the amount of $500 for the benefit of high school graduates selected by Vernon Hunter's church, Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, in Austin, Texas. These scholarships include trade schools also.
When you read our Mission Statement below, you will learn our primary focus includes building affordable homes for qualified families. The balance of the $250,000 (or greater amount) will be used for that purpose. I believe others across the country will also donate to the Vernon Hunter Memorial Fund. I am planning on being able to build at least two homes that will be marked as a Memorial to Vernon Hunter.
Donations by check can be mailed to PO Box 164016, Austin, Texas 78716 and can be made payable to Partners in Affordable Housing, Inc., with the words "Vernon Hunter Memorial Fund" mentioned any where on the check or on a note. We acknowledge all donations.
Thank you for your generosity, Eli Apolzon . . .

"Remembering Vernon Hunter" by Matthew Wright |
|
"Who is Vernon Hunter? I wouldn’t have known the answer to that question if it weren’t for a few dedicated writers. They decided to spotlight the real hero of last week’s domestic terrorist attack against an Austin IRS building. Vernon Hunter was from Orangeburg, South Carolina. He was a husband to Valerie. He was a father to Donald, Ken, and Christine. He was a step-father to Justin, Crystin, and Tara Jackson. He was a Vietnam veteran, who was employed at the IRS building at the time of the premeditated, cowardly attack of a terrorist."
