St. Paul's Lutheran Church Mass City, MI
News from St. Paul's LC in Mass City, MI

Welcome to St. Paul's & the NORTHERN LIGHTS LUTHERAN PARISH
Greetings - St. Paul's of Mass City, First Lutheran of Winona, and Siloa of Ontonagon have joined together as the NOTHERN LIGHTS LUTHERAN PARISH. As of January 1, 2012, Julie Belew, LLM will be serving as our lay minister / adminstrator as we continue our pastor search. Pastor John Autio from Mission United in Pelkie will continue as our LLM supervisor and Julie will be running the show (with service help from Andy Hill).

The new parish board has had a couple of meetings to lay the foundations of the Northern Lights Lutheran Parish. A combined service to install Julie Belew was held at Siloa Lutheran at 9 am on January 15, 2012 with Bishop Thomas Skrenes presiding.

We ask for your prayers for our new member churches and for Wainola Lutheran Church as they move forward (they decided to not join the other churches as a four-point parish).

SOUP'S ON! NEXT SOUPER COMMUNITY MEAL IS MARCH 20 - 2 - 6 PM AT ST. PAUL'S - NO CHARGE - COME ONE, COME ALL !

St. Paul's Souper Kitchen update - St Paul's has been working on plans to hold a community dinner and much of the back ground organization has been done. Meals will be held on the THIRD MONDAY OF THE MONTH starting in February - 2 to 6 pm at St Pauls. Please join us for a meal and/or to help out - all are welcome.

UPDATE FOR FEBRUARY 20 SOUPER COMMUNITY KITCHEN MEAL - 23 workers and attendees (plus numerous meals delivered to shut ins)enjoyed a wonderful chicken soup / bread / desert meal - spread the word - we want this number to grow!

Meet Julie Belew
While we are introducing new faces, I asked Julie to give us a little BIO for the newsletter. Julie will help Pastor Autio fill our Sunday schedules for the next year or so and it is expected that she will be scheduled about twice a month at this point. This is what she sent us about her background:

I come to your congregation through the TEEM (Theological Education for Emerging Ministries) program of the Western Mission Cluster of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, comprised of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, CA and Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. Completion of this program meets the established expectations and requirements for ordained ministry.
Currently, I am a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and hold the office of church council secretary. Over the past three years I have enjoyed doing pulpit supply for area churches. My husband, Bucky Beach, is the Pastor of Good Shepherd.
About a year ago, I was laid off (along with co-workers and clients) from my full time position as manager of a retail store and work center for adults with developmental disabilities. I spent this year in prayer and meditation seeking God’s direction for the next step in my life’s journey.
I have always had a love and intrigue for theology. I finished my BA in Liberal Studies from Finlandia University focusing on philosophy, religion, and conflict resolution; many years prior to that I attended other universities and a two-year program at Rhema Bible College that prepared me for mission work. I worked with the Spanish population in Tulsa, OK and later lived in Jyvaskyla, Finland to help a congregation in the process of forming a church.
The majority of my work experience lies in academic institutions and human service related fields (mental health, crisis intervention, developmental disabilities).
It was during this contemplative lay-off period, that I started taking classes at the Northern Great Lakes Synod Lay School for Mission and my vision and mission for Christ was renewed. I knew it was time to complete my life’s journey by entering seminary. When I told my 17 year daughter Erin what I intended to do next, she said, “Oh Mom, it is so you!” My other three children, who have left the nest, also think what Mom is doing is cool! My eldest son Michael is 26; Nathan is 24, and Anneli is 19.
With full support of friends and family, I eagerly look forward to the road ahead. This is a long awaited path I have dreamed to travel on and I am so excited to share it with you!
Grace and Peace,
Julie

UPDATE : (FEbruary 2012) - JULIE HAS been installed as our LLM to cover our parish until we have a full time minister. We welcome our continued relationship with her now that she has finished her intership. Julie was installed as the LLM for the new Norhtern Lights Lutheran Parish on January 15, 2012.

Simple Gifts and Malaria Net - Local and Global Outreach
SIMPLE GIFTS - each Sunday, St. Paul's sets aside loose change in the offering plates to help the needy in our communities. We thought the idea originated at United Lutheran in L'Anse but they informed us they borrowed the idea from a church in Green Bay. No matter the source, since we began the program at St. Pauls in early 2007, we have donated $2000 in 14 separate donations to the local food bank and St Vincent De Paul. The treasurer logs the change and usually makes a donation when we hit $100 (although we have had longer time intervals that ended up being $200 and $300 donations).

Thank you for your continued support of this valuable local outreach.

MALARIA NET PROJECT -

Beginning in September of 2008, St. Paul's has hosted monthly fellowship coffees with the donations dedicated to the synod's Marlaria Net Project.

Malaria is a preventable disease, yet in Africa, one in every five children will die from it at a rate of one child every 45 seconds.

Insecticidal nets, manufactued in Tanzania (which also bolsters the local economy) protect sleepers from mosquitoes carrying the malaria parasite. More information can about the Malaria Initiative at www.elca.org/malaria or by calling 800-638-3522 .

To date, (March 2012), Over $9,000 has been rasied for this life-saving initiative. This includes a matching grant from Thriven Branch 30918 in the amount of $940 - that translates into 800 malaira nets! Thank you for your generosity!

UPDATE - St. Paul's has dontated $1,000 to the NGLS MATCHING GRANTS for the work being done in our companion synod in Tanzania. This money helped raise the $20,000 NGLS share of the matching grant money to be used in building the new boy's dorm and on other projects at the school. Connection to the water system (as opposed to using collected rain water and hand carrying well water a great distance) happened during the work crew's 2011 visit. Please check out the NGLS programs for this very worthy companion synod project!
